Sounds like a great idea

In my opinion a homemade PVC bender is an NEC violtion.

352.24 Bends ? How Made. Bends shall be so made that the conduit will not be damaged and the internal diameter of the conduit will not be effectively reduced. Field bends shall be made only with bending equipment identified for the purpose. The radius of the curve to the centerline of such bends shall not be less than shown in Table 2, Chapter 9

IMO that is a bit of a stretch. I agree with the bending radius, but as long as the pvc is bent in a manner as not to harm the pvc, what is the difference between a boughten pvc heater and a homemade one? Will a inspector be able to tell by inspecting the pvc after the fact as to how it was bent?

For those that have not seen that debate, the other side of the debate is that you do not "bend" the pipe with the heater, you simply prepare it for bending with a heater, so even if you use a heater designed for the purpose, many people still actually "bend" with their own jigs, or other methods not "identified" for bending.

The NEC says this ...

Field bends shall be made only with bending equipment identified for the purpose.

How an inspector can enforce it is not my concern but to me it is clear that the above rule makes it a violation to use a plumbing torch, or a pile of coals, or anything not identified for the bending of PVC.

I have heard kwired's opinion and I disagree with it.

Ultimately the only opinion that will matter will be the opinion of the local AHJ or inspector.

I do ask those that disagree with my opinion what exactly those words in the NEC mean?

Not UL listed if someone got hurt using it he might have an issue but I still thought it crafty.

It was and I have respect for ingenuity, I just feel it happens to be an NEC violation.

I have also used things not identified for PVC bending to bend PVC, I am not an angel.

I will only say what I said previously in this thread, you do not "bend" the pipe with the heater. If the CMP's intention was to not use methods for heating that are not identified for the purpose then they did a very poor job of wording that. I have never seen a "bender" for PVC, only "heaters" intended for preparing to bend.

End of my input on this (probably not, someone will say something I will feel I must respond to:)). It has been hashed on this forum before, someone maybe can find link to the thread.

I think the worst I ever did was pour a can of glue in the trench and set it on fire to heat the pipe.

It worked great, smelled awful. I don't think I'll ever do it again.

I bought a hot bend 2 years ago, and have not used anything since! It works well after you get used to it, and I can expense my gas grill LP like I used it for the Hot Bend!
