422.51 Cord-and-Plug-Connected Vending Machines.
Cord-and-plug-connected vending machines manufactured
or re-manufactured on or after January 1, 2005, shall include
a ground-fault circuit interrupter as an integral part of
the attachment plug or be located within 300 mm (12 in.) of
the attachment plug. Older vending machines manufactured
or remanufactured prior to January 1, 2005, shall be connected
to a GFCI-protected outlet. For the purpose of this
section, the term vending machine means any self-service
device that dispenses products or merchandise without the
necessity of replenishing the device between each vending
operation and is designed to require insertion of a coin,
paper currency, token, card, key, or receipt of payment by
other means.

Edit, I misread OP.

It's actually a good question.

I did a restaurant, where there were two 'stations' for the waitresses to obtain your drinks. The above-counter part of the soda dispenser got a GFCI, simply because it was near a sink.

When I did the dispensers ("soda fountains") for a mini-mart, I don't think I used GFCI's

Keep in mind that a dispenser will likely have three receptacles associated with it. One is for the part that actually fills your cup with soda. A second will be below the counter, and power the pump. Finally, you might want to place a receptacle up high, to power the ice machine that sits atop the dispenser.

Unless this unit is in a bathroom:eek:, kitchen, on a roof top, or outdoors, GFCI protection is not required.

GFCI protection is not prohibited either though.

I believe you quoted the correct article, and yes, they need to be gfci protected.

I disagree, see 422.51

See 422.2 Definition:

Vending Machine. Any self-service device that dispenses products or merchandise without the necessity of replenishing the device between each vending operation and is designed to require insertion of coin, paper currency, token, card, key, or receipt of payment by other means.

If this soft drink dispenser does not require insertion of coins, currency, credit cards, or other payment methods before it will dispense product, then it is not a vending machine by definition of this article.

How many times have you just walked out of a restaurant without paying the bill? Lets use McDonald's self serving soda machines as an example?

If it were a vending machine by art 422.2 definition, you would have to present a payment method to the dispensing machine before it will dispense any product. Your example dispenses whether payment was made or not - it is not a vending machine by the definition that applies to art 422.
