I had an inspector stop by a friend of mine to look over the new pool he is putting. He sees some low voltage landscape lights and mentions that low voltage lights need to be 15 feet from the pool edge. He (my friend) mentions that the pool light is low voltage and not sure why there is a difference. Can someone please point me in the right direction here, thanks.

Well the inspector is correct except that the lights must be 5' from the inside wall of the pool Art. 680.22(B). Art 680.22(B)(4) allows lights within the area but they must be gfci protected. A gfci on the line side of a transformer will not protect the low voltage side.

Lighting protected by a GFCI can be within 5' of the pool. Lighting not protected by a GFCI must be at least 10' from the pool. Low voltage lighting is required to be at least 10' from the pool since it is not GFCI protected.

Thanks Curt I should have said at least 10' not 5' for the now gfci.
