This question came up in Raleigh last year or the year before. The CMP member who answered it stated that a panel could be in a clothes closet but it would depend on where it was located. For instance, behind a door in the closet would be a place that would be compliant. Of course, getting an inspector to agree with that would be another issue. We just avoid the area altogether.

I find this requirement rather silly. A panel in a basement or garage can have wood, cardboard boxes, spray paint, paint thinner, gasoline or a list of any other easily ignitable materials around it. Are covered panels typically spewing sparks all over the place?

So, in CA all load centers should be located outside and remote from the building? This is getting better all the time. :D

Oh, no, I could care less where you put the panel, within the code of course. I was answering the, if frogs had wings question......frogs having wings is the same as trying to enforce 90.4, probably not gonna happen.:D

This totally ignores all the required space that we know everyone keeps around the panel. Grin
