I'm pretty sure the neutral is correct. He couldn't mis-mark that one, it's got the stripe on it. I did look in the meter can and I'm almost certain it was correct. I will check again in the morning. Probably even remove the neutral from the lug and check again.

thats strange the only time i have ever seen a wire (neutral) with a stripe on it is in SER, wonder if he had some extra stripped it out removed the bare and used the rest, (that even legal?) i'm still scratching my head over your continuity issues, i use GE all the time ... just can't think of what would cause that,

as for sabotage would hope the former elec. had a little more pride than that but ... you never know

Did you locate the problem with the panel box?

Ok, let me start by saying I've been very frustrated with this job and let it get to me and wasn't thinking clearly. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I usually take more time and think a little clearer than what I have been.

I turned everything off, which I thought I had yesterday, and lost the continuity between the can/neutral bus and one of the legs. I turned everything back on and again showed continuity so I turned off everything one circuit at a time until I lost the continuity. There were no light bulbs installed that I would be reading off of but the circuit that showed the continuity was a light circuit. But this circuit also had the smoke alarms on it and apparently the smokes read like a light bulb would and that was where the reading came from.
The continuity I was reading from the neutral bus to the can was from the bare EGCs touching the can and them being on the same bus as the neutral.
Ok I feel much better now. I hope everything is good when I hook a generator up to the panel to check everything out. Been a rough job!:happysad:

I can't speak for anyone else, but I know I've had those days (or jobs) also. Can't seem to see my hand in front of my face. I've found it helpful to walk away for a few minutes. Call a buddy and talk about fishing or something. Sometimes the simple answer suddenly becomes clear.

Ofcourse, this forum has become an invaluable troubleshooter too.

Glad you found it!
