Thanks Augie. I assumed I might have to use some 1900 boxes or the shallow depth old work boxes (plastic).

With 8 outlets not working the first thought is to figure out the one problem that would cause this.

Instead there were several different problems.

So I try not to imagine too much before I get to job, just think in general terms.

And what if it had been one of those calls from distant friends, asking for help troubleshooting over the phone?

I've had to deal with owner/occupant trying to fix things before and creating more problems than there was to start with. Sometimes you just find that it should have never worked unless somebody changed something and won't admit it.

Anyway, here's what I found and you've probably all seen before:

1) One tandem breaker had melted right off the bus bar, so they need a new panel. That was the cause of two circuits not working.

2) About 2/3 of the receptacles are melted/burned and the ones that aren't won't hold a plug.

I have seen a lot of bad connections where the CB connects to the bus but not multiple melted/burned receptacles. What would cause that in multiple locations?

Those self clamping receptacles and switches go bad frequently, someone just left them and plugged in somewhere else, all those burned receptacles probably didn't suddenly all go bad at the same time.
