Let?s say you had a surface mounted panel and a disconnect next to each other about 2 ?? between them, and they are in a closet with approx. 1 inch of clearance on each side of both combined. (Including handle of the disconnect)
The question is; if applying NEC 110.26(A)(2)
Would you be required to provide the 30 inches from the center of the panel and then 30 inches from the center of the disconnect, or would you simply consider the width of both combined constitutes the clear space (which ends up being approx. 41 inches)

Any and all insight is appreciated!

I am not sure I can correctly envision the installation. Are you saying that from the left side of the one item to the right side of the other item is 41" wide? If so, then keeping that much space clear is adequate. But I am not sure how wide each item is. So let me put it this way: The 30" does not need to begin at the center of the panel (or disconnect).

Le me assume the panel is on the left, and the disconnect on the right. You could start from the left side of the panel, and go 30" to the right (or further, if the panel is wider than 30"). That much space must be kept clear. Now start at the right side of the disconnect, and go 30" to the left (or further, if the disconnect is wider than 30"). That much space must be kept clear. If those two spaces overlap, that is OK too.

Very good,
So if our clearance is the width of the equip., we could shift it all to one side with the edge flush with the closet opening and have 2 inches clear for the handle, is there a minimum clearance for the lever handle of the disconnect?
Or are we good?
