SW Florida, historically a leader in construction economy, is dead in the water. There is very little manufacturing jobs in this area. this is Service type area. Restaurants, hotels, beaches etc. They ain't back to where they used to be.

It is important to note that the criteria for "expansion" is not the same for government statistics as for the individual.

Example: Economy so bad that investors start jumping from tall buildings. Government statistics would say that at least the funeral home industry is doing well.

Just remember that if you buy guns and ammunition to protect yourself from looters that is economic expansion. :D

We need to be careful not to get the pole closed too early, it would be nice to give time for a lot of responses.

Right now I have a decent workload. Not great but better than just a couple of months ago.

Friday I was talking with my main supplier and they are very busy right now. They may bring back a guy that was laid off not that long ago.

Another local guy called me the other day to ask what I have been charging. He is raising his rates to what I charge because he is so busy he can afford to lose out on a few jobs. Since I talked to hime I started charging more per hour. ;)


Who knows where this will lead. :roll:

BTW, I didn't answer the poll because it seems to me that one only has to watch the news or read the paper to know that as a whole the economy is in pretty tough shape.

Not much work but only relative to the boom times enjoyed previously.

When people ask if I have much work, I say "No, but I never liked working 14 hour days anyway."

I had dropped my hourly rate a while back, now I've raised it back to where it was.

Some of my tenants are having trouble paying their bills, but I don't remember that ever not being the case.

And we Americans spent 6 billion dollars on Halloween.

That's really great news Scott and I'm so glad to here it about you personally, hopefully it continues to improve.

The point of the poll was to get a reading beyond the "news". News reports the bad, sensational, etc. They don't often report on good news. Without you sharing, I would not know that there is improvement in your area.

What would be considered normal

It seems companys expand when things are booming which sometimes last for years then things turn for the worse and the downsizing/layoffs begin. I am not sure what normal is, you cant go from a 8man shop then double or triple your size and expect things to stay that way. I was laid off for the first time in 25years thru this spring and summer but have been busy the last several months it just seems like it is boom or bust.

Rigth now I'm busier than I was last year at this time. I will never again say
" I have too much work". We'll have to see where we are in January, last year I had 0 work.

:mad:Not sure how it is here. I was in a pretty good situation until a couple months ago when that niche dried up. More I think due to the aging infrastructure of those plants then simple market for their product although that demand is down. A different product and better is now readily available. I had been letting other work slip past am going to have to work a bit harder now to catch back.up.

Very bad here in So Cali. My own business is dead, (I am officially closing it Dec. 31st.) , unemployment is over 12%, and the most telling sign is that EVERY apt building in my six-square block area has one or more vacant rentals. (Except mine.)

In the six years I have lived here a vacant apt. has never sat for more than a week. Most of the current vacancies are months old. The management company that runs my building has hundreds of vacant units right now.

And what I have heard is that things will get worse for 2011...yikes.

Along with great, hearty, and relevant electrical insight,
there is enough distraction and humor already, with electrical things.

I like the humor about switch/receptical covers
having vertical slots on plate screws so as to not collect dust
and
two-prong recepticals
having screw attachments for Non-Metallic EGC wires.

Have even passed some along to electricians I know.
