I would tend to think that the answer was no also. I should clarify that the applicatioon I am working on is for Class II Division 2 and the device in question is a motor which is rated for Class I Group C and D. While the NEC requires a Class II Division 1 rating or a totally enclosed pipe-ventilated motor for Class II Division 1 the Class II Division 2 requirement is a bit more relaxed.

The issue would be the permitted surface temperature of the equipment. The exterior temperature can be higher on Class I equipment than on Class II equipment. The temperature requirement that is in 502.145(B) for Class II, Division 2 locations does not appear in 501.125(B) for Class I, Division 2 locations.
