I am working on a project that requires modification of a control panel: We are going to replace a old PLC rack with a new AB PLC rack. Do we have to have the panel UL508 labeled after we are done.

Our state AHJ may call that a like in kind replacement and no permit is required. But you are changing the panel from the original listing, which could be an insurance issue.

First, replacing the PLC with a different type would probably void the UL label. The real question is why do they have a listed panel? The NEC does not specifically requires it but may juridictions do. Did their insurance require it or maybe the manufacturer simply labels all of their panels and the labeling it not really required in this installation. If it needs to be labeled, you may have to pay a UL inspector to review it.

BTW, it UL508A, not UL508. UL508 is for components and UL508A is for the control panel as a whole. I've been around many UL inspectors and they point this out reguarly.

Thanks to all

Thanks to all

Thanks for all the inputs. I think I should contact the state inspectors and tell him what i am going to do. That way if he does ask for it then I do not have to have it labeled.
